Travel Into the Heart of Darkness

The Heart of Darkness bar

in Phnom Penh Cambodia is an icon here like the FCC, two must go places.  When I traveled here last 10 years ago HoD (Heart of Darkness) used to be a hangout for backpackers, ngo idiots and a handful of Khmers out parting.  The bar really kind of sucked, the lighting and AC were terrible, the music sucked and the food wasn’t that good, the only thing it had going for it was the name, I mean who would travel all the way to Phnom Penh and not have a beer in the Heart of Darkness.  I went there again last night and was pleasantly surprised to see that they had really put some work into the place.  They have moved some things around like pushing the bar back and some new tables to give you more room to move around.  They have also put in new lighting, AC and sound system which makes it much nicer to hang out on those hot Cambodian nights.  They were a lot more Khmer’s hanging out and having drinks and happy to say didn’t see a single backpacker, yea!  Mostly just expats who work here and Khmer.

The lady scene here is ok but you won’t be picking up any Khmer lady’s here, all the ones I saw were all on dates, didn’t see any single local girls just out parting (lots of men here, gay, think that is a growing scene here).  There were a few female ex-pat teachers that I talked to for a bit, nice and all but I’m in Cambodia I want to meet Khmer honnies.  There are also some “working” ladies floating around, mostly older Vietnamese.  Overall a really mellow place to just hang and have a few, or if you’ve had three or four too many shots, grab one of the Viets for a sure sex thing 😉

4am in Phnom Penh

Its 4am in Phnom Penh been out all night, just sent the cutie I was drinking with home in a tuk tuk and I’m freaking starving.  So where do you go at 4am in Phnom Penh to grab something to eat?  Well, one answer is Nagaworld hotel and casino 😉 open all night with free food if your putting a few coin in the slots. Also even though most of their 6 restaurants are closed at 4am they do have a tex mex buffet type place called the NagaRock that’s open 24/7.  Eating Tex Mex in Phnom Penh Cambodia with a Vietnamese girl I picked up while playing slots at 4am in the morning, life is good.

P.s. would have been better if I had won the car that the slots were giving away.

Phnom Penh, where have all the Vietnamese ladies gone?

1st time back after 10 years and I remember there used to be a ton of Vietnamese ladies running around all over the place.  They were very cute and sexy and I had spent many hours in the Heart of darkness bar, drinking an Angkor and playing bar games with them.  Now there are only some very hard looking and well lets say seasoned vets at the bars.  When I asked around I was told that there was some kind of visa immunity thing that happened and most of the Viets went back home.  Sigh….. ah the memories.

Phonm Phen 2012 has change alot

I just got here for the 1st time after 10 years and man has it changed.  The main difference is all the cars now, before it was mostly scooters and bikes with the occasional NGO nob in a Toyota 4 runner.  Now traffic jams at all times of the day are the norm.  And you might say, cool, its about time that Khmer have some breaks and progress after the shit years of the 80’s and 90’s.  But I don’t think its all that it appears to be, cause if you look behind the new cars and roads and look really really closely you will see brand new 100k land rovers being driven by a police officer or a guy in a government uniform, how is a guy working for the Cambodian government driving around in a 100k land rover?  And its not just the rare sighting of one or two exotic rare expensive SUV’s  they’re everywhere, take a tuk tuk ride around town and you will see Land rovers, Lexus SUV’s, BMW’s Audi’s, Porsche’s and man do they ever look vulgar and out of place driving around the the dusty trash loaded back streets of Phnom Penh.

Cold as #&%^ in Thailand

Normally I’m sitting here in a pair of shorts, no shirt, no shoes, just shorts, but today I’m in long pants, long sleeve shirt, hoody and a pair of thick socks. In my 15 years living here this is about as cold as I’ve seen it.

But, this is a great time for you guys to come over, cause it might be cold to me, I’m pretty much acclimatized after living here for so long, its great for visitors who think 68 degrees in warm. 68 degrees the wife and myself are busting out our down jackets that we picked up during our trip to NZ a few years ago.
